Vegetable & Fruit Compost FAQs

Is mushroom compost better than regular compost for fruit and veg?

Spent mushroom compost is high in organic matter content which makes it a useful material for soil improvement and water retention.

Can you use too much compost?

Regular or heavy use of fruit and vegetable compost usually leads to a build-up of chalk particles in the garden soil and to increased soil alkalinity, which can negatively affect plants.

Does compost suppress weeds in vegetable patches?

This compost suppresses weeds as a mulch or soil amendment by forming a barrier against weed growth, blocking sunlight and hindering seed germination. Its nutrient content promotes plant growth that can outcompete weeds, improving weed control within your vegetable patch.

Can I use compost instead of soil?

Our compost is a fantastic conditioner that offers numerous benefits for plant growth, but using it as a complete replacement for soil is generally not recommended.

Mixing this compost with our vegetable and fruit topsoil creates an optimal environment that benefits both components – this ensures your plants get the essential nutrients, moisture, and improved structure needed for healthy growth.

What fruit and vegetables can I use the compost on?

Alsoils’ compost is perfect for berries such as strawberries and raspberries, root veg such as potatoes and carrots, and so much more! Generally speaking, you’ll need one part compost to three parts soil, but you’ll need to research further for the specific crop you plan to grow.
