If you’re looking to grow new grass seeds or lay new lawn turf, you should consider adding a layer of mushroom compost to enhance its growth. Mushroom compost is often said to be a good product to use within flowers and vegetable beds, but not many gardeners know if it can help their garden lawn.
In this gardener’s guide, we outline whether mushroom compost is beneficial to use when growing new grass seeds or laying new turf.
Can I use mushroom compost to grow grass seeds?
If you’re looking for a quick answer, then yes, it’s good to mix grass seed with mushroom compost for small areas of your garden and other applications. Whilst you can mix the two, it isn’t the preferred method for all situations.
Young grass seeds require a range of factors to ensure they grow in a healthy manner and water is high up on that list. One of mushroom compost’s best qualities is its moisture retention capabilities, which makes it a highly sought-after fertiliser to use in the garden.
Should I put mushroom compost down before or after seeding?
Mixing grass seed with mushroom compost in addition to turf and lawn topsoil is the best way to spot-apply seed to small patches and thinning areas of your grass lawn, however, if you’re wanting to grow turf in larger areas, the optimal method is to simply put a small layer of topsoil and mushroom compost (2-3cm) down first, then use a grass-spreader to evenly apply your grass seed.
Grass seeds are particularly small, and they are extremely sensitive while in the germination stage, which means if you put mushroom compost on top you could end up suffocating the grass seedlings before they have a chance to grow.
