Bark & Mulch FAQ
The best time is in spring and autumn, when soil temperatures are stable and plant growth is either beginning or slowing. Applying mulch in spring helps retain moisture and suppress weeds before they establish, while autumn mulching helps protect roots over winter. Mulch can be applied at other times of year if needed, but results are usually most effective during these seasons.
It should generally be laid at a depth of 5–7cm (around 2–3 inches). This provides effective weed suppression and moisture retention without preventing air and water from reaching plant roots. Applying mulch too thinly reduces its effectiveness, while laying it too thick can restrict drainage.
A weed membrane is not always essential, but it can be helpful in areas with persistent weeds. When used correctly, a membrane combined with bark mulch provides extra protection against weed growth. In well-maintained borders, a good depth of mulch alone is often sufficient.
Most are mildly acidic, but this rarely causes problems in established gardens. For most plants, the effect on soil pH is minimal. If you are growing plants that require very specific soil conditions, your team can advise on the most suitable mulch option.
Yes, it is ideal for use around trees and shrubs. It helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect roots. When applying mulch, leave a small gap around the base of the trunk or stem to prevent moisture build-up and reduce the risk of rot.
